Pregnancy is an extraordinary time filled with excitement, anxiety, sleeplessness, an unbelievable amount of joy and lots of sacrifices. This statement rings even truer for a pregnant mom like Alex. Earlier last week, I had the opportunity to photograph a Documentary Maternity session for this wonderful soon-to-be second-time mommy with her daughter, Rilynn. It was a fun-filled time spent at the pumpkin patch enjoying each other's company.
This was Alex's first experience having her photographs taken this way and it's fair to say she had some doubts when it came to having a documentary session.
"I really didn't know it was a thing. It seemed very odd at first, I have always had posed photos taken, and wasn't sure about the idea of documentary photography."
Originally, we had the idea to take the photos at an earlier date in September, but due to some scheduling conflicts, we decided the session should be set at a later time. Working together, we were able to pick the perfect date and planned out a fun activity for her and her daughter to do together. Even though the closer we got to October 10th the more uncertain things started to get, I was determined to make the session work.
"I took today off FOREVER ago, to do our maternity fall pictures at the pumpkin patch, so it would be less crowded. OF COURSE, it turns out to be the coldest day of the season, so far, plus gloomy/rainy, and I was paranoid it wouldn't work out. Thanks to Koren Smith, we toughed it out, and I am SO excited to see how they turned out!!"
"I just got to be mom."
The day of the session, Alex had some concerns. She was nervous her three-year-old would not cooperate and was worried that the pictures would not turn out the way she'd prefer. She was use to being given directions of what to do during all of her previous photo sessions. Those fears started to disappear as we headed into the pumpkin patch and got started. She soon realized that having her photos taken without being posed was actually her favorite part. It started to feel more like spending time with a friend and less like a photo shoot. Without the stress she could enjoy her time with her daughter on the farm.
"It was like a day at the pumpkin patch! My daughter got to wonder around and be herself, and I just got to be a mom! It wasn't stressful "SMILE, no don't stick your tongue out! Can we just get ONE good picture today?!?!" She was very happy, because she was leading the session! In a traditional session, your photographer would be telling you to do this, and do that, and smile, now look at the sky (or wherever), and telling you exactly what to do. In this session, we just played, walked, talked, and did what my daughter loves to do every day!"
Alex loves her photos
"I have NO idea how to pick a few favorites! My daughter looks so relaxed and happy, because I wasn't forcing her to do things she doesn't want to do!! I was excited to see Rilynn as a big sister, and happy I have pictures of Rilynn being Rilynn, playing, splashing, and exploring!!"
"You get to capture THEM, as THEMSELVES."
In the end, Alex adored this kind of session. She was able to have fun and focused on what really matters, spending time having fun with her daughter. Her fears were put to rest and now highly recommends it as an option to others looking for something different.
"Try it once, and you'll never want to do traditional pictures again! Especially if you have kids!!! You get to capture THEM, as THEMSELVES, not just in posed pictures to hang on the walls - and remind you of how stressed you were that day! They have FUN, and Koren captures THEM."
